How You’re Killing Your Chances Before You Even Started Job Searching

Fear of No

Not Good EnoughSometimes you want to grab someone by their hair and shake all the bull out of their head.

This happens when I’m working with a job seeker. Not just any job seeker, of course. You meet a great one who has years of experience, highly talented with marketable skills AND a nice person to boot. Wow!

BUT this nice person could not find themselves a job. Why is that?

Because they have this inner gremlin in their head. And I want to shake them all out like that last bit of ketchup from the bottle.

In my recent webinar, I talked about 7 mistakes job seekers often make. Top 1 for me would be what I call…

Premature Ejection.

Uh-huh. you read wrong. I said E-JEC-TION. Like the ejection seat in jet planes and the Batmobile.

Premature ejection happens when you, as a job seeker, read a perfectly good job opening and prematurely disqualify yourself from even applying. Like, huh?

Have you had these thoughts in your head?

“They are not going to hire me anyway.”
“I’m not good enough.”
“There are other people who deserve it more.”

Yeah, you may be right. But mostly, you are wrong.

All of this inner gremlin chatter is just noise for something else… THE FEAR OF REJECTION (or fear of not being liked). Because honestly, who’s going to reject you when you’re not applying, right? Sure. But in the end, that fear is also keeping you far away from landing an offer.

Fear of NoLet’s get this straight:

  1. About half of the requirements listed in the job openings are nice-to-haves. Unless the hiring team is in a real pinch, they prefer to hire someone they like and can see themselves working with.
  2. It’s not personal – both ways. They need to a human with the right expertise, soft skills and must fit in their work culture. If you don’t have that, it’s not personal. And if you don’t like what the company stands for, it’s not personal either.
  3. You just need the right YES – one YES!

Rejection is a fact of life when looking for a job. You can easily overcome this fear when you know you’re just looking for that ONE company (out of tens or hundreds) to say that glorious yes and send you a clean sparkling sheet of an offer letter. You don’t need everyone to like you.

What if the life and career of your dreams are just on the other side of that one Yes?

And all you have to do right now is to start applying.

The more NO’s you experience, the better you become with your job searching skills. The more NO’s you get, the more you receive feedback and improve on your approach.

For every NO, it’s one step closer to that YES.
