Getting a Job: What to do?

Getting Jobs: What to do?

Hi I’m Meema Esguerra from The Get Hired Coach, where we get you jobs.

Job searching can often be discouraging and overwhelming. We work hard everyday for a long period of time, sending resumes, sending cover letters and answering phones. Only to receive silence, rejections or probably a polite maybe later.

And I get that. When I was busting my balls looking for a job, I started out full of hope and full of confidence. And after months of getting zero responses for my application, experiencing rejection after rejection, I felt like my soul was being sucked right out of me. And I became depressed even desperate, because I felt like I was not in control of my future.

So what did I do to get myself out of that rut?

I sulked and cried my heart out.

But one thing, I never did was I never gave up.

After a good cry, I thought to myself what can I do to be back in control and be the captain of my job searching ship.

So I changed my strategies: I took a more proactive approach for a more productive job search experience. And I just stopped taking NOs and rejections personally.

And here’s a fact: big companies do not even open 90% of resumes they received. I mean it’s just way overwhelming.

So when you start feeling to get sucked into that vortex of overwhelm and anxiety, here are some things you can do:

Number 1 – Change your strategy.

Ask yourself, what can you learn from this experience? Is the job market changing? Is the hiring process changing? What can you do to improve yourself or improve your approach?

Number 2 – I only need one YES.

Of course we have our mantra: I only need one YES. In job searching, you CAN be rejected, you CAN be overlooked. But as Taylor Swift says, shake it off and just say next.

Number 3 – Take a break.

This might be a good sign that you’re doing too much.Take a break. Before, during and after job search, you want to have a lifestyle where you take care of yourself.

And finally, never give up.

And there you have it. Today we discussed what to do when your job search isn’t working. Do you have any additional tips, please leave a comment below to share to the world. And if you’d like to receive career advice and job search tips, please subscribe below. See you next week.
